All about IPL hair removal at home

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) reduces hair growth using light pulses that are absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle. In this knowledge base you will find evidence-based information, from how it works and safety to skin types, treatment areas and aftercare. Whether you are considering starting with IPL or already have experience, this knowledge base gives you grounded information to make informed choices.

IPL: basics & how it works

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, a technology that converts light pulses into heat to put hair follicles into a resting phase. The result depends on timing: hair grows in cycles, and only hairs in the active growth phase (anagen) respond to treatment. That is why several sessions are needed for a visible result.

Treatment areas & skin types

Not every area responds to IPL in the same way. Legs and arms cover a large surface quickly, but the bikini line and upper lip call for a lower intensity and more precision. Your skin and hair combination also plays a part: dark hair on lighter skin gives the strongest result, while on a medium skin tone the right intensity adjustment makes the difference.

Safety & aftercare

Most side effects of IPL are mild and temporary: slight redness or warmth that fades within a few hours. The right preparation and aftercare reduce the risk of irritation and improve your result. Avoid sun before and after a session, and use a soothing, fragrance-free gel to help the skin recover.

FAQ

Is IPL hair removal at home as effective as in a salon?

The working principle is the same: light pulses that put hair follicles into a resting phase. Salon devices have higher power, so results are sometimes visible sooner, but clinical studies show that at-home devices give comparable long-term results with consistent use. The Nova One itself has been clinically tested: more than 80% less hair growth within 7 weeks. The main difference is consistency: in a salon you depend on appointments, at home you set your own schedule. Read more in the IPL hair removal guide.

Can I combine IPL with shaving or waxing?

Shaving is fine and in fact recommended: shave the area 12–24 hours before your IPL session so the light reaches the follicle directly. Waxing and epilating are not allowed, as these methods pull the follicle out of the skin, leaving no pigment to absorb the light. After an IPL session you can shave in between, but avoid waxing until you have completed the full treatment cycle.

How often do I need a maintenance session?

After the initial treatment period of 8–12 weeks, most users find a maintenance session every 4–8 weeks is enough, depending on your hair growth and hormone balance. Some areas such as the upper lip may need maintenance more often than legs or arms. You will notice it yourself: when slight regrowth becomes visible, it is time for a session. Stopping altogether can mean hair growth gradually returns after a few months.

Is IPL hair removal suitable for men?

Yes. IPL works on the basis of hair pigment, not gender. Men mainly use IPL on the back, chest, shoulders and neckline. Bear in mind that male body hair is often thicker and denser, so you may need more sessions than average. The face below the cheekbone line (jawline, neckline) can be treated, but the beard area itself is not advised because of the high hair density and pigment concentration. Read more about IPL for men.

How many sessions do I need for a lasting result?

Most users need 8–12 weekly sessions for a visible reduction of 70–90% in hair growth. That is because hair grows in cycles, and only hairs in the active growth phase respond to IPL. After the initial cycle you maintain the result with occasional maintenance sessions. Factors such as hair colour, skin tone and hormones influence the exact number. The Nova One’s skin sensor helps determine the right intensity for your combination.

Can I use the Nova One all year round?

Yes, as long as you avoid direct UV exposure around your sessions. Do not use the Nova One on tanned or sun-damaged skin, and wait at least 2 weeks after intensive sun exposure. After a session your skin is more sensitive: avoid direct sun for at least 48 hours and use a high SPF. The winter months are ideal for IPL because the skin is lighter and you get less sun. With the right precautions, though, you can treat all year round.
