Why is the correct IPL intensity so important?

The problem: Every skin is different and requires a unique intensity for safe and effective hair removal.

Too high intensity: When set too high on a darker skin tone, the skin absorbs too much light energy. This can lead to burns, blisters, or hyperpigmentation. Many users do not know their skin tone and unknowingly choose an unsafe setting.

Too low intensity: Out of fear of skin damage, many users choose a setting that is too low. The result: the light pulses do not sufficiently reach the hair root, and the treatment yields little to no results, despite weeks of consistent use.

Laesera solves this with a built-in skin sensor that automatically detects your skin tone and adjusts the intensity, with every flash, on every zone.

How does Laesera's skin sensor work?

1

Automatic skin tone detection

With every contact with your skin, the built-in sensor automatically scans your skin tone based on melanin levels. This happens again with each flash, even when you switch between treatment areas with a different skin tone, such as from your legs to your bikini line.

2

Automatic intensity adjustment

Based on the measurement, Nova One immediately adjusts the IPL intensity to a level that is safe and effective for your skin tone. For skin type VI, the device automatically blocks the flash to prevent skin damage.

3

Safe and effective treatment

The result: the right intensity for each zone, without manual adjustment or consulting Fitzpatrick charts. Suitable for skin types I to V, maximum results with minimum risk.

Technical specifications: Suitable for Fitzpatrick skin types I to V | Automatic lockout for type VI | 5 energy levels | Detection with every flash

Three ways to treat

The Nova One adapts to your preference. Choose how much control you want to retain, from fully manual to automatic skin tone recognition. In every mode, the sensor remains active and blocks the flash when your skin tone is not suitable.
Switching between modes: briefly press the power button and the flash button simultaneously. The modes switch in sequence: manual → automatic → skin tone recognition.
1

Manual mode

You decide
You select the intensity level (1–5) and press the flash button yourself. The sensor still checks if your skin tone is suitable, but the intensity choice is entirely up to you. Always start at level 1 and gradually increase.
Full control
2

Automatic mode

Continuous flashing
The device automatically flashes once the treatment window is in full contact. The previously set intensity level remains active. Ideal for large areas such as legs or arms where you want to work quickly.
Quickest treatment
3

Skin tone recognition

Sensor determines
The sensor scans your skin tone and automatically adjusts the intensity level before each flash. After recognition, the device switches back to manual mode. Ideal for changing zones such as from legs to bikini line.
Most accurate
Active in every mode: regardless of the mode you choose, the sensor always blocks the flash for skin type VI. For skin type V, a lower energy level (1–2) is automatically applied. You can manually select a higher or lower level, but stop immediately if you experience discomfort or heat.
TIP
Are you treating multiple zones in one session? Switch to mode 3 (skin tone recognition). Some areas, such as the bikini line or upper lip, may be darker than the rest of your skin. The sensor automatically adjusts for each treatment area.

Frequently Asked Questions about Skin Sensor Technology

What does the skin sensor of the Laesera Nova One do?

The built-in skin sensor automatically scans your skin tone before the light pulse is delivered. Based on this, the Nova One adjusts the IPL intensity to a level that is safe and effective for your skin type. You don't have to choose any settings yourself.

For which skin tones is the Nova One suitable?

The Nova One is suitable for light to medium-dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick type I to IV). For dark skin tones (type V and VI), IPL is not suitable due to the risk of skin damage. Are you unsure about your skin type? Take the skin type test for personalized advice.

Can I also set the intensity manually?

Yes, the Nova One has 5 energy levels that you can select manually. The skin sensor acts as a safety limit: even if you manually select a higher setting, the device will block the flash if that setting is not safe for your skin tone.

How does the skin sensor work with the ice cooling?

The two technologies complement each other. The skin sensor determines the correct intensity for your skin tone, while the ice cooling ensures that the treatment remains comfortable at that intensity. Together, they make it possible to treat effectively without compromising on safety or comfort.

Do I need to calibrate or maintain the skin sensor?

No. The sensor works automatically with every skin contact and requires no calibration, maintenance, or updates. Keep the contact surface clean for optimal measurement.

Is the skin sensor reliable on all body zones?

The sensor remeasures with each flash, regardless of the zone. Skin tone can vary between, for example, your legs and bikini line; the sensor automatically adjusts per treatment area. This ensures you get the correct intensity for each zone. The sensor works identically with the interchangeable attachments.

Can I use the Nova One on tattooed skin or scars?

No, the skin sensor cannot correctly recognise tattooed skin and scar tissue with irregular pigmentation. Do not use the Nova One on these areas. Only treat the skin around tattoos and scars, keeping a minimum distance of 1 cm.
