Skin sensor technology

Discover how the built-in skin sensor of the Nova One automatically recognises your skin tone and adjusts the IPL intensity, for a safe and effective session matched to your skin type.
Using an IPL hair removal device on the arm with the Laesera device during a treatment

Why does the right IPL intensity matter so much?

The problem: every skin is different and needs its own intensity for safe, effective hair removal.

Intensity too high: at too high a setting on a darker skin tone, the skin absorbs too much light energy. This can lead to burns, blisters or hyperpigmentation. Many users do not know their skin tone and unknowingly choose an unsafe setting.

Intensity too low: for fear of skin damage, many users choose too low a setting instead. The result: the light pulses do not reach the hair root sufficiently and the treatment delivers little to no result, despite weeks of consistent use.

Laesera solves this with a built-in skin sensor that automatically detects your skin tone and adjusts the intensity, on every flash, on every area.

How does Laesera’s skin sensor work?

1

Automatic skin tone detection

On every contact with your skin, the built-in sensor automatically scans your skin tone based on melanin content. This happens again with every flash, including when you move between treatment areas with a different skin tone, such as from your legs to your bikini line.

2

Automatic intensity adjustment

Based on that measurement, the Nova One immediately adjusts the IPL intensity to a level that is safe and effective for your skin tone. On skin type VI the device blocks the flash automatically to prevent skin damage.

3

A safe and effective session

The result: the right intensity on every area, without manual settings or consulting Fitzpatrick charts. Suitable for skin types I to V, maximum results with minimum risk. Skin type V is suitable to a limited extent.

Three ways to treat

The Nova One adapts to your preference. Choose how much control you want to keep, from fully manual to automatic skin tone recognition. In every mode the sensor stays active and blocks the flash when your skin tone is not suitable.
Switching between modes: briefly press the on/off button and the flash button at the same time. The modes cycle in order: manual → automatic → skin tone recognition.
1

Manual mode

You decide
You select the intensity level (1–5) yourself and press the flash button yourself. The sensor still checks whether your skin tone is suitable, but the intensity choice is entirely yours. Always start at level 1 and build up gradually.
Full control
2

Automatic mode

Continuous flash
The device flashes automatically as soon as the treatment window makes full contact. The intensity level you set earlier stays in force. Ideal for large areas such as legs or arms where you want to work quickly.
Fastest treatment
3

Skin tone detection

Sensor decides
The sensor scans your skin tone and adjusts the intensity level automatically before every flash. After recognition the device switches back to manual mode. Ideal when moving between areas, such as from legs to bikini line.
Most precise
Active in every mode: whichever mode you choose, the sensor always blocks the flash on skin type VI. On skin type V a lower energy level (1–2) is applied automatically. You can manually choose a higher or lower level, but stop immediately if you feel discomfort or heat.
TIP
Treating several areas in one session? Switch to mode 3 (skin tone recognition). Some areas, such as the bikini line or upper lip, can be darker than the rest of your skin. The sensor adjusts automatically per treatment area.

Frequently asked questions about skin sensor technology

What does the Laesera Nova One skin sensor do?

The built-in skin sensor automatically scans your skin tone before the light pulse is delivered. Based on that, the Nova One adjusts the IPL intensity to a level that is safe and effective for your skin type. You do not need to choose any settings yourself.

Which skin tones is the Nova One suitable for?

The Nova One is suitable for light to medium skin tones (Fitzpatrick types I to IV). On dark skin (type V) IPL is suitable only to a limited extent and with extra caution: the lowest settings and a patch test beforehand. On very dark skin (type VI) IPL is not suitable because of the risk of skin damage. Unsure about your skin type? Take the skin type test for personal advice.

Can I set the intensity manually as well?

Yes, the Nova One has 5 energy levels you can select manually. The skin sensor acts as a safety limit: even if you manually choose a higher setting, the device blocks the flash if that setting is not safe for your skin tone.

How does the skin sensor work together with the ice cooling?

The two technologies complement each other. The skin sensor determines the right intensity for your skin tone; the ice cooling makes sure the session stays comfortable at that intensity. Together they make it possible to treat effectively without compromising on safety or comfort.

Is the skin sensor reliable on every body area?

The sensor measures again with every flash, whatever the area. Skin tone can vary between, say, your legs and bikini line, and the sensor adjusts automatically per treatment area. That way you get the right intensity on every area. The sensor works identically with the interchangeable attachments.

Can I use the Nova One on tattooed skin or scars?

No, the skin sensor cannot correctly recognise tattooed skin or scar tissue with irregular pigmentation. Do not use the Nova One on these areas. Only treat the skin around tattoos and scars, keeping at least 1 cm distance.
