All about IPL
What is IPL and how does it work?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It is a technology that uses broad-spectrum light waves to target the melanin (pigment) in your hair. The light is converted into heat, which damages the hair follicle during its growth phase without affecting the surrounding skin.
The result: hair growth gradually slows down. After several sessions, hairs grow back less frequently, thinner, and eventually not at all.
What is the difference between IPL and laser?
Both work based on light and pigment, but:
- Laser uses one specific wavelength, more concentrated and faster for professionals
- IPL uses a broader spectrum of wavelengths (e.g., 510-1200nm), safer for home use
At-home IPL devices like Nova One offer comparable long-term results to salon IPL, provided you are consistent with treatments.
What wavelength does Nova One use?
The Nova One operates with a wavelength range of 510 to 1200 nanometers. This range has been clinically investigated as optimal for melanin absorption in hair follicles, while sparing the skin.
A built-in filter blocks UV light below 510nm, ensuring that no harmful radiation reaches the skin.
What is ice-cooling and why is it important?
Ice-cooling is a built-in cooling function that actively cools your skin to ~10°C during each flash. This achieves three things:
- Numbness of the skin, so you feel virtually no heat
- Protection of the top layer of skin against heat transfer
- Allows for higher intensity and better results without discomfort
Without cooling, IPL in some areas (especially the bikini line and armpits) feels like a rubber band snapping against your skin. With ice-cooling, you feel virtually nothing.
What is the skin sensor and how does it work?
Nova One has a built-in skin tone sensor that automatically detects your skin type before flashing. Based on this:
- The device automatically adjusts the intensity
- The device blocks the flash if your skin is too dark for safe use
This prevents burns and ensures optimal operation for every skin type within the safe range.
What is the skin sensor and how does it work?
IPL works best on light to light-brown skin (Fitzpatrick I to IV). On dark skin (Fitzpatrick V and VI), IPL is not safe: the melanin in the skin absorbs the light, with a risk of burns and pigment changes.
Are you unsure? Use our Skin Checker for a quick indication. Nova One also has a built-in skin tone sensor that automatically blocks the flash for unsuitable skin types.
Does IPL work on every hair type and every hair color?
IPL works on melanin (pigment) in the hair. This means:
- Works well: black, dark brown, brown hair
- Works less well: light blonde, red hair
- Does not work: gray, white and peroxide-blonde hair (no pigment)
Do you have very light hair? Then electrolysis or laser treatment from a specialist is a better option.
Can I use IPL during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
We do not recommend IPL during pregnancy or breastfeeding. There is no scientific evidence that it is harmful, but there are also no sufficient studies to guarantee safety. Furthermore, hormonal changes during these periods can:
- Reduce effectiveness
- Cause pigment changes in the skin
Wait until after the breastfeeding period before starting or resuming.
Can men also use IPL?
Yes. Nova One is designed for both men and women. Commonly used areas for men:
- Chest and abdomen
- Back
- Shoulders
- Lower legs
Important: Do not use IPL on your beard or on the face below the cheekbones for men. The hair follicles are deeper and stronger there. We advise men against IPL on the face.
From what age is IPL safe?
We recommend IPL from 18 years of age. Below 18, hormone levels are still unstable, which makes the treatment unpredictable. For teenagers, we advise waiting until after puberty for maximum effect.
For minors considering IPL for medical reasons, we recommend a consultation with a dermatologist.
All about results and usage
When will I see the first results?
First difference: after 2 to 3 treatments (approximately 3 to 4 weeks). You will notice that hairs grow back slower and feel thinner.
Significant results: after 6 to 8 treatments (8 to 12 weeks). Many people then experience 60 to 80% less hair growth.
Full results: after 10 to 12 treatments. After this, you will switch to maintenance (1 session every 4 to 8 weeks).
How often should I use IPL?
For optimal results:
- First 4 weeks: once a week
- Weeks 5 to 12: once every 2 weeks
- Maintenance after week 12: once every 4 to 8 weeks if needed
The treatments must be well-spaced because IPL only works on hairs in the growth phase, and not all hairs are in that phase at the same time.
Do I need to shave before the IPL treatment?
Yes, shaving is a prerequisite for effective IPL. The reason:
- Hair above the skin absorbs the light before it reaches the hair follicle under the skin
- In addition, hair above the skin can burn, causing irritation and odor
What you should do: shave with a razor or trimmer 12 to 24 hours before treatment.
What you should not do: waxing, epilating, or using tweezers. These methods pull out the hair, including the follicle, leaving nothing for IPL to work on.
Are the results permanent?
IPL offers long-term hair reduction, not 100% permanent hair removal. No technology (not even salon laser) can fully guarantee that.
After the initial treatment series (10 to 12 sessions):
- Most hairs no longer grow back
- Remaining hairs are thinner and lighter
- 1 maintenance session every 4 to 8 weeks maintains the result
Hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause, hormonal disorders) can trigger new hair growth, even after successful IPL.
All about safety and side effects
Is IPL safe for home use?
Yes, provided you use the device correctly on a suitable skin type. Nova One is CE-certified in accordance with EU directives for cosmetic equipment and has multiple safety mechanisms:
- Skin tone sensor that blocks unsuitable skin types
- Contact sensor: only flashes when the head is fully on the skin
- UV filter that blocks harmful wavelengths
- Automatic intensity control
Always follow the manual and do not skip sessions.
Can I use IPL with a tattoo or moles?
Never flash on tattoos or moles. The dark pigments absorb a lot of light, with the risk of:
- Burns
- Fading of the tattoo
- Damage to moles
Cover these areas with white medical tape during treatment, or avoid them.
Should I shave before the IPL treatment?
Yes, shaving is a prerequisite for effective IPL. The reason:
- Hair above the skin absorbs the light before it reaches the hair follicle under the skin.
- Additionally, hair above the skin can burn, causing irritation and odor.
What to do: Shave with a razor or trimmer 12 to 24 hours before treatment.
What not to do: Do not wax, pluck, or use epilators. These methods pull the hair, including the follicle, out, leaving nothing for the IPL to work on.
Are safety glasses mandatory?
Yes, for:
- Treatment around the face (above the cheekbones)
- Sensitive eyes or if you have eye conditions
For body areas (legs, armpits), glasses are not strictly necessary as you are not looking directly into the light, but we still recommend them for maximum safety. The included glasses are CE-certified specifically for IPL wavelengths.
Everything about other hair removal options
IPL versus salon laser, which is better?
Both work on similar principles, but:
- Salon laser: faster per session, higher intensity, trained operator. Costs: 70 to 250 euros per session, 8 to 12 sessions needed. Total: 600 to 3000 euros.
- Home IPL: at your own pace, comfort of home, one-time investment. Comparable long-term results with consistent use.
For dark skin and very thick hair, professional laser treatment is superior. For 90% of users, home IPL is an effective and affordable alternative.
IPL versus epilation or waxing?
Both methods temporarily remove hair, but the difference lies in the time horizon:
- Waxing: hair removed for 3 to 6 weeks, after which it fully grows back. Painful, annual costs (40 to 100 euros per zone at a salon).
- IPL: upfront investment, but after the treatment series, hair is structurally reduced or gone. Comfortable with ice-cooling.
Does IPL work better than an epilator or razor?
The question is not 'better' but 'for what purpose':
- Razor: instant results, but hair grows back within 1 to 3 days. Cost: ongoing.
- Epilator: hair-free for 2 to 4 weeks, painful, not suitable for all areas.
- IPL: upfront investment, then structurally less hair over years.
Many users combine: daily shaving during the IPL treatment phase, and stopping once hair growth is minimal.
